Description
E-book edition with additional material. Poems and short stories by Amanda Williams spanning 40+ years. Some nature poems, some autobiographical; descriptive and lyrical, they reveal a love of nature and the British countryside. Her earlier poems, such as "Firelight" and "Holiday" were written in the late 70s as a student and are quite traditional in style, written in rhyming couplets, alternate rhyme and even in sonnet form. Her later poems, however, written in the last fifteen years have a much more modern feel, in blank and free verse with a smattering of alliteration and internal rhyme; for example, "Stepmother", "Carpe Diem", "Sunburn", "Back to Yellow", "Her Protest" and "Dust". So there are poems for lovers of both modern and traditional verse. The three short stories at the end of the book range from amusing to slightly mysterious and even a bit dramatic and make for an entertaining read. "This small volume is intended to be a feel-good book. It will carry you away from everyday life for a short while and leave you smiling – and if you are of 'a certain age' it will evoke happy memories of your childhood." It is something with which to while away a lazy summer evening in the garden, or to enjoy from a comfy old armchair by an open fire on a winter afternoon - with a big mug of tea and possibly a biscuit or three."
